Pregnancy in Germany

If you are pregnant, all of the usual medical services in Germany are available to you. You don’t have to be ill to be allowed to go to the gynaecologist.

Women visit their doctor every four weeks during the first few months of pregnancy. During the final eight weeks, they visit the doctor every two weeks. These examinations are carried out to ensure that you and your child are well. Every time you go, you will be weighed and your blood pressure will be measured. Sometimes a blood sample is taken. Three ultrasound examinations are carried out to see how your child is developing.

You also have the right to advice from a midwife during your pregnancy, labour, childbed and breastfeeding. A midwife can help you if you have problems breastfeeding, or if you have questions about how best to take care of your baby, for example.

You can find more information on the topic of health in the brochure "Health Guide for Asylum Seekers in Germany". You can download it and order it here.

If you are pregnant and need help, call the multilingual phone helpline "Schwangere in Not" ("Pregnant women in need"). You can reach them 24 hours a day and free of charge, on the number 0800 4040020.
