The Media in Germany

German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel at a press conference

Very few countries have as wide a range of information on offer as Germany. Newspapers, radio, television and numerous online services make it possible to be comprehensively and objectively informed on topics which are of special importance to you. The public television and radio stations have developed special services for refugees, where you can find a lot of valuable information but also detailed and current reports on refugee policies. Deutsche Welle has also created a programme which will help you get to know Germany.

The media is independent – there is no censorship

Journalists in Germany can report freely on all topics. Society reacts strongly to any attempts to influence the press. Freedom of opinion is guaranteed in the Grundgesetz (constitution). Article 5 states:

"Every person shall have the right freely to express and disseminate his opinions in speech, writing and pictures, and to inform himself without hindrance from generally accessible sources. Freedom of the press and freedom of reporting by means of broadcasts and films shall be guaranteed. There shall be no censorship."

Services provided by the stations ARD, SWR and Deutsche Welle for refugees.
