LIVING IN GERMANY

Political and Legal Order

Constitutional state

Constitutional Court judge

The Federal Republic of Germany is a democratic and social state under the rule of the law. Quite simply, this means that the state’s agencies and institutions cannot just do as they like. They must abide by rules and laws. No basic citizens’ rights may be violated, for example freedom of religion, the right to freedom of expression or equality.

The police and courts are here to help you

If you feel like your rights have been violated, you can inform the police or bring the matter before the courts. German courts are independent. They are not allowed to be influenced by politics. This is an important pillar of democracy. The courts may not make arbitrary decisions, either. They must always abide by the constitution ("Grundgesetz") and other laws.
