Your daughter or son should obtain a good school-leaving certificate and find a career which suits her or him. Your support is needed for this. In Germany, parents play an important role in their children’s education. You must make sure that your child attends school regularly and completes their homework. Parents receive letters or leaflets at the beginning of the school year. Sometimes there are information events, where you will find out what your child will learn and which school materials are necessary.
Parents help at school
There are parents’ evenings ("Elternabende") at each school during the school year. This is when the teacher meets the parents of all pupils in the class. You will be given important information here and can ask questions. You can also arrange an appointment to speak to the teacher individually, for example if there are any problems or you simply want to know how your child is doing at school. The teachers will be pleased to work together with you and will be happy if you take interest. They are not only interested in the performance of your child, but also in helping him or her find their own way.
You can also get involved at the school as a parent, for example by helping out at school functions. This is a way of showing that you are interested in your child’s life and surroundings, which is bound to make your daughter or son happy.
