Germany consists of 16 federal states ("Bundesländer"). There are duties for which the federal government is responsible and duties which are the job of the Bundesländer. One example is education. The school systems in the individual Bundesländer always differ slightly from one another. The types of school have different names and they differ from each other. Accommodating refugees is also the responsibility of the Bundesländer. Your future accommodation in a communal accomodation centre ("Gemeinschaftsunterkunft") or a flat ("Wohnung") depends on the Bundesland in which you live.
